And…Boom: Apple Worth More Than Microsoft

And there it is. Today Apple, not Microsoft is the world’s most valuable technology company.

As I write this Apple (AAPL) shares are trading at $244.87, giving it a market capitalization of $223.1 billion. Meanwhile, shares of Microsoft (MSFT) are trading at $24.79 and the company’s market cap sits at $217.78 billion (see table below; click to enlarge).

And so Cupertino has finally surpassed Redmond in total value. The only American company with a market cap greater than Apple is Exxon Mobil (XOM).

A remarkable and somewhat ironic milestone considering it was Microsoft that breathed new life into a struggling Apple back in 1997 with a $150 million investment in the company. What was it Bill Gates said at the time? “We think Apple makes a huge contribution in the computer industry. And we think it’s going to be a lot of fun helping out.”

Good times.

17 Percent of Verizon Customers Would Upgrade to iPhone

AT&T’s iPhone-exclusivity deal hasn’t yet expired; nor has Apple announced plans to sell the device through a second U.S. carrier. But that’s not stopping analysts from speculating about what might happen when it does.

Riffing on rumors of a Verizon (VZ) iPhone, Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty theorizes in a research note this morning that given the opportunity, nearly 17 percent of the carrier’s customers would upgrade to an iPhone (see chart below; click charts to enlarge).

“According to our [Alphawise U.S. consumer iPhone survey], there is substantial pent up iPhone demand within the Verizon installed base as 16.8 percent of Verizon subscribers said they are ‘very likely’ to purchase an iPhone if offered on the Verizon Network,” Huberty writes.

“This 16.8 percent is higher than AT&T subscriber’s 14.6 percent extreme interest in the current AT&T iPhone,” Huberty elaborates, “and well above the overall iPhone extreme interest of 7.5 percent.”

Assuming Verizon does add the iPhone to its smartphone lineup and that most of its subscribers who said they were “very likely” to purchase the device do so over a two-year period, Huberty figures Verizon stands to sell about seven million to eight million iPhones annually.

Interestingly, Huberty’s forecast for Phone demand at Verizon does not assume sizable subscriber losses at AT&T. In her view, the end of the carrier’s iPhone-exclusivity deal won’t be the blow some observers claim. AT&T (T) and Apple (AAPL) will obviously remain partners, she says.

In markets where the iPhone has gone from single-carrier to multiple-carrier distribution–France, for example–the carrier that lost exclusivity hasn’t suffered much at all. Beyond this, there’s the issue of early-termination fees, which will make it difficult for current AT&T iPhone users to flee. Says Huberty:

  • 60 percent of the iPhone base is locked until 2H11/1Q12. An iPhone refresh could bring a new wave of subs to AT&T and extend the lock-down of those who upgrade. 80 percent of AT&T’s postpaid subs are sticky customers (70 percent are on a Family Plan (FP); 40 percent on business discounts).
  • For current subs, the Early Termination Fee (ETF) is $175 falling $5/mo for the term of the contract; for new smartphone subs it’s $325, falling by $10/mo. Every line on a FP has a contract/ETF of its own. In addition, customers would have to pay for a new device if switching carriers.

One final point: Huberty sees Apple shares hitting $400 sometime in 2011. Why? “The market underestimates the earnings power of Apple’s mobile Internet devices,” she wrote. “We view the combination of new product launches, broader distribution [carrier, international, enterprise], more attractive pricing and strong upgrade rates as the key demand drivers over the next two years.”

Facebook, MySpace Confront Privacy Loophole

Facebook, MySpace and several other social-networking sites have been sending data to advertising companies that could be used to find consumers’ names and other personal details, despite promises they don’t share such information without consent.

The practice, which most of the companies defended, sends user names or ID numbers tied to personal profiles being viewed when users click on ads. After questions were raised by The Wall Street Journal, Facebook and MySpace moved to make changes. By Thursday morning Facebook had rewritten some of the offending computer code.

Advertising companies are receiving information that could be used to look up individual profiles, which, depending on the site and the information a user has made public, include such things as a person’s real name, age, hometown and occupation.

Is the iPad Cannibalizing Other Apple Products?

One of the big questions surrounding the launch of Apple’s iPad was whether the device would cannibalize sales of the company’s other products. Would customers forgo buying a laptop or even an iPod to instead get the iPad?

ZUMA Press

Based on April numbers from market researcher NPD, the answer appears to be that the iPad isn’t taking sales away from Mac computers, and effects on the iPod don’t look like a big problem for Apple, according to PiperJaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Mr. Munster points out that sales of Macs were up 39% in April from a year earlier — indicating a “minimal” impact from the iPad. On the other hand, iPod sales were down 17% year over year in April, which could mean that the iPad is “slightly cannibalizing” iPod sales. Analysts hadn’t expected as much of a jump for Macs but had expected iPod sales to be better than they were. But even if consumers who would have purchased an iPod are buying an iPad instead, Mr. Munster says, the higher price of the iPad means this is a positive for Apple.

The April results include just the first month of iPad sales in the U.S., and Mr. Munster said he believes that in the long run the impact on the Mac “will exist but will be minimal.” Apple, he writes, “has successfully limited the iPad functionality to primarily content consumption” as opposed to “content creation.”

When it comes to the iPod, sales have been falling for some time as customers look to the iPhone instead. The iPad, with its larger screen, could be accelerating the move away from the iPod, but it’s difficult to say to what extent. Customers also could be postponing their next purchase of a small-screen device until a new version of the iPhone comes out, likely this summer.

The results also indicate that people may be seeing the iPad as a new type of device, which could be good for Apple. But, as the Journal’s Walt Mossberg wrote in his review of the iPad earlier this year, consumers may eventually want more out of their iPads than media consumption — and if Apple provides that, the iPad could become a laptop killer after all.

Moguls Mull the Future of Media

The highlight of this year’s edition of the cable industry annual meeting may be today’s discussion with executives from nearly every big U.S. media company (and a tech interloper). We’ll list them in alphabetical order to avoid bruising any egos: Tech-industry pioneer Marc Andreessen ; Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes , CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves; Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, who is expected to take over NBC Universal as well; and Tom Rothman, co-CEO of News Corp.’s film division. If that’s not enough firepower, the panel is moderated by former FCC chairman Michael Powell.

The media types are coming off mostly rosy first-quarter financial results, but still face troubling questions about how their businesses can adapt to the rising popularity of online video and renewed regulatory interest in Internet.

Thanks, Jim Cameron! “Avatar” Gives News Corp. a Big Bump.

Wall Street was expecting big things from “Avatar”–this is what happens when you’re the biggest movie in history–and it delivered.

The film’s performance helped push News Corp.’s quarterly earnings above Wall Street’s expectations, generating revenue of $8.8 billion and earnings of 32 cents per share. Analysts had been looking for $8.23 billion and 22 cents, respectively.

Some of that lift came from Rupert Murdoch’s movie unit, which recorded the highest operating income in its history. But News Corp. (NWS), which owns this Web site, had a pretty good quarter all the way around. Even its newspaper properties, which have been a drag on the company for some time, are on the rebound, with The Wall Street Journal posting a 25 percent jump in ad revenue.

Per usual, there’s next to nothing in News Corp.’s documents to suggest that it’s in the Internet business in any way. The company does mention that its Digital Media Group–essentially, MySpace and a few other properties–saw operating losses increase “principally due to lower search and advertising revenue.” But it doesn’t offer more information.

I’m sure we’ll get into some details and perhaps updates on other News Corp. digital efforts, like fighting Google (GOOG) and building pay walls, during the company’s earnings call. Check out the liveblog here.
