Why Google Pays 10 Billion USD to Its Competitor Mozilla?
To Make Google as the default search engine, Google and Mozilla will renew the cooperation agreement at around 10 billion USD. In the case of haveing their own web browser "Chrome", Google's cooperation with Mozilla is understood as a kind of support to their competitor with their money. But Why?
On one hand, Firefox still has millions of users and this agreement means that millions of users will use Google as the default search engine when they are using Firefox. And using Google to search means Google can display ads and that means money to Google.
But 3 billion per year, that is 3 times more than the price in the agreement they signed in 2008. What's interesting is that Google released Chrome after they signed the agreement in 2008. From a common point of view, with the raise of the Chrome's share in web browser market, they should reach an agreement at a lower price. Although Firefox still takes up 1/3 of the web broswer market, their share is going down and the reason is Chrome.
Chrome is like a beast in the market of browser, it is swallowing the share of IE and also Firefox at the same time. Actually, according the the data from StatCounter, Firefox's share in browser market is lower than 2008. Think about it. Aug, 2008, 26.08% of people were using Firefox as their browser, 68.91% were using IE and at that time, Chrome was not released by Google. Last month, 25.23% of people were using Firefox as their default web browser and 40.63% of them were using IE. Chrome took 25.69% of the market. It's true that more people are choosing Chrome as their default web browser than choosing Firefox.
So Google will pay 3 times money, while Firefox's share in browser market is lower than 2008. Why they do that?
The first reason comes to my mind is the competition. Because of the bid. Microsoft wants Bing become the default search engine of Firefox. And it is really interesting that Yahoo also takes part in the bid and Yahoo's search engine is from Bing. So one reason is that Google spend money to let Microsoft and Yahoo out of the game. It's possible.
Microsoft spends billions of USD to try to compete with Google in search engine market. One of the result of this is that Google and Bing swallow Yahoo's share in search engine market together. Now Bing provides the result of Yahoo's search engine, so Bing hurts itself. Nowadays, Bing and Yahoo take the same percent of the search engine market share and Bing is paying this. Here I have to say that Bing and Firefox's cooperation is do useful to Bing. Let's say that Bing know that and when they talking about the cooperation, they are not cheapskate, but they are not that generous and will pay 3 billion a year. Because from the market share, 3 billion is a little crazy.
So why Google still pay this high price to Firefox? Analyst said that compare with the income from displaying ads through Firefox and competition with Bing, avoiding the problem of anti-monopoly after Chrome's share continue growing is the real problem Google cares.
It's not crazy, actually if now it is not the reason, it will be the reason in future. So far, it is relatively safe for Google's browser market in anti-monopoly. They are not like Microsoft and Apple, Google can not control the default browser in any kind of operation system. However, the problem will become more and more serious with the large download of Chrome from google.com and the success of Chrome OS. I think there will be a larger pressure from mobile devices. Now, web browser on Android devices looks like a normal browser, with more and more element from Chrome are added to it. It will become the real Chrome some day.
That means Google has a dominant operation system (Android) to promote their web browser. That will bring investigation from anti-monopoly just like Microsoft few years ago. But if Google pays money to support Mozilla and Firefox, it's another question. Let's wait and see.

Samsung couldn’t enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich to Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab?
Android is a giant mobile platform that develops at a fast pace, along with each new major version comes confirmation from the OEMs that not every product in existence will be getting that shiny new OS update. Samsung announced that several of its recently released products would be upgraded to Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) by March 2012 on Wednesday, including the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note. The company followed up by saying that the Galaxy S, released in June 2010, and the Galaxy Tab, released in October 2010, will not be able to take the upgrade, despite being fairly recent releases.
Why does Samsung couldn’t enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich to Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab? According to Samsung's official statement: the Galaxy S, which is actually less than 18 months old, doesn't have sufficient RAM or ROM to run the new operating system along with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface overlay. Samsung also said that the Galaxy Tab won't receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update either. The devices' ROMs are too small to hold Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, Widgets, video-calling application, and Android 4.0 at the same time.

Is Apple iPad 3 coming out in early 2012?
According to a Citi analyst, Apple’s next-generation iPad -- likely called an iPad 3, is expected to come out in early 2012. If recent analysis about Apple's imminent tablet plans are true, the third-generation iPad will arrive sometime between February and April 2012. In a research note sent last Thursday, Richard Gardner said "several sources" indicated that Apple would launch its next-generation iOS tablet as much as a month earlier than it released the iPad 2 in 2011.
Such a device would be similar to the iPad 2, but include Apple's high-resolution retina display technology found on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S by doubling the iPad 3's screen resolution, said analyst Richard Gardner in a research note. The analyst also said that "there do not appear to be any significant technical hurdles remaining" to prevent the launch of a high-resolution iPad, which contradicts previous reports that fitting such a dense screen into an Apple tablet was one of the reasons Apple iPad 2 maintained the 1024 x 768 resolution of the first iPad. Both the first iPad and iPad 2 displays have a pixel density of 132 pixels per inch.
It’s reported that another feature of the next-generation iPad will have the same screen size but will be a bit thicker than the iPad 2, in order to support hardware that would increase the display resolution from 1,024-by-768 pixels to 2,048-by-1,536. iLounge's best source thinks that the iPad 3 will be 0.7 mm thicker, and trade magazine Digitimes has reported that Apple is at least considering a thicker unit in order to accommodate the sensors necessary for the better, so-called Retina Display (so dubbed because, according to Apple, the human eye cannot make out the individual pixels on the screen). If the iPad 3 does come out with a thicker body, it will join in on the great American tradition of emerging from the wintertime fatter than before.
Production of the new iPads is expected to reach 9.5-9.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012. Sales of iPad products totaled 25.06 million in the first three quarters of 2011 and are likely to reach 40 million units for all of 2011, the sources estimated. However, the new Android tablets like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime look to be much better direct competition for the iOS-based iPad than the first generation of tablets based on Google's mobile operating system. Cheaper, smaller device like Amazon's Kindle Fire, Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet, and even a sub-$100 tablet using a MIPS-based chip are starting to appear.
Apple could head off competition from similarly priced Android tablets at the pass by getting its latest, greatest tablet technology out a bit sooner than expected. That would also have the effect of reducing prices for older versions of the iPad, which would encourage consumers attracted to the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet to instead climb aboard the iOS platform at a discount.

Carrier IQ Meets with FCC and FTC, Explaining Privacy Concerns
Carrier IQ, the embattled phone-monitoring software maker, sought meetings with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to educate the two agencies about the functionality of its software and answer any and all questions this week. Although Congressman Markey has asked the FTC to investigate the practices of Carrier IQ, we are not aware of an official investigation into Carrier IQ at this time.
The Federal Trade Commission is the US organization that protects consumer privacy and enforces privacy-related laws, and would be Carrier IQ’s primary foe if an investigation is undertaken. “Consumers and families need to understand who is siphoning off and storing their personal information every time they use their smart phone,” Markey said. “I am asking the Federal Trade Commission to investigate this practice, and I will continue to monitor this important privacy issue.”
However, the FTC did not immediately respond to a request for information, the agency does not generally reveal the subjects of its investigations unless the company at issue makes it public. For those who need a refresher, Carrier IQ made headlines in recent weeks after a researcher, Trevor Eckhart, suggested that the technology is secretly embedded on many popular phones and can gather personal data about users. Carrier IQ said its technology is used for diagnostic purposes and denied logging keystrokes or being able to read the content of emails, text messages, or Web sites.
Lawsuits have been filed against Carrier IQ and some carriers, while lawmakers are peppering Carrier IQ with questions and asking the FTC to investigate - which looks like it just may be happening. The public backlash has been fast and furious, in part fueled by the company's reaction to the initial report - Carrier IQ served a cease-and-desist order on Eckhart. The company eventually backed down after the Electronic Frontier Foundation got involved on Eckhart's behalf, but the damage was done as the move made it seem like Carrier IQ was trying to censor a whistleblower and had something to hide.
More recently, there were reports that the FBI was using Carrier IQ software. A blogger filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request asking for details about the agency's use of the technology, but that request was denied because, the FBI said, it might interfere with law enforcement efforts. Someone speculates that "What is still unclear is whether the FBI used Carrier IQ's software in its own investigations, whether it is currently investigating Carrier IQ. The response would seem to indicate at least the former, since the request was specifically for documents related directly to accessing and analyzing Carrier IQ data."
Carrier IQ came out on the charm defensive, releasing a comprehensive FAQ detailing exactly what – and what not – was supposedly collected by its network monitoring tools. Nonetheless, many carriers themselves have been quick to put distance between them and the analytics firm.

Carrier IQ was found in New Android Applications
The company behind the now-notorious Carrier IQ software that has been found to log every keystroke pressed, website visited and text message sent by 150 million mobile phone users. Carrier IQ, of course, professes its innocence, but the company has also received some public support from security researchers who say Carrier IQ software is only tracking diagnostic information and likely is not violating user privacy. Now, Carrier IQ has elaborated upon many arguments with a more detailed breakdown of how its software functions, and a more substantive defense of its practices.
During a recent interview with the Register, Carrier IQ VP of marketing Andrew Coward acknowledged that his company's mobile software logs keystrokes, intercepts text messages and gathers geographic data, but insisted that the overwhelming majority of this information is discarded almost as soon as it comes in, thereby posing virtually no threat to user privacy.
Carrier IQ only retains text messages or keystroke patterns that carry proprietary tags. These tags identify all transmissions that could be used to populate analytic data, including some that may be considered sensitive. If a user drops a call, for instance, the system will note his or her location, and the numbers of each party. In other cases, the company may receive a special SMS, which provides Carrier IQ with important diagnostic information.
Now, Carrier IQ has legal and publicity problems to handle. One new class-action lawsuit names both Carrier IQ and HTC, accusing the companies of violations under the Federal Wiretap Act. Another lawsuit was filed against Carrier IQ as well as HTC and Samsung, both of which have confirmed installing Carrier IQ software on their Smartphone, saying they do so at the request of wireless carriers.
Why Android only? Carrier IQ is no longer supported as of iOS 5 (Apple insists its customers have to opt-in before any information about their Smartphone is shipped off to Apple HQ), and blocking its effects on your iOS 5-based iPhone is super-easy: Click on your Settings button, then General, About, Diagnostics & Usage, and select " Don't Send."
However, Carrier IQ is a bit more integrated within the Android OS – so much so, that you'll need to root your device prior to attempting any removal efforts. But the first step in the process is finding out whether your Smartphone has Carrier IQ installed to begin with. And Lookout's new application makes this a one-touch affair.
Carrier IQ boasts that its software is deployed on more than 141 million handsets, and has operated for several years without any major level of controversy. Clearly, Smartphone would be capable of tracking much of our activity even if Carrier IQ never existed. But the lawsuits filed against Carrier IQ and its customers, and forthcoming responses to Franken's letters, should shed more light on exactly what information is collected and how it is used.

As an old Apple fan, I always plan to share my experience on iOS tips. Every time I try to conclude tips on iOS, there will be a big upgrade of iOS and many features are changing after upgrade. Today I will introduce the AssistiveTouch on iOS to you and hope you like it.
Actually, iOS provides assistivetouch long time ago, but as the old version of it is really difficult to use and not many iOS users know it very well. However, after the new iOS release, it also brings us a brand new AssistiveTouch to users. It becomes a perfect instead of the Home button and makes the Home button has a long life. Today I will introduce you how to use the AssistiveTouch
It is first introduced into iOS as an assistant for people with disabilities. Nowadays, after the update it becomes an important role to protect the Home button and it makes some operation much easier.
Firstly, we need to find how to set the AssistiveTouch. Go to "Settings" and enter "General" and find "AssistiveTouch" option. Open it and you will find a round picture, yeah right, it is the "AssistiveTouch". Click the icon and you will find that it includes 4 parts. Each part represents the functions corresponding. It is really easy to understand.
The next part is "Gesture", click "Gestures" and you will see 2, 3, 4, 5 four different gestures. Those gestures represent many troublesome operations. For example, if you have an iPad 2 and you need to use 4 fingers slide from down to up to come to the Task Manager Menu. But if you click AssistiveTouch's 4 and you just need one finger to finish the operation. Just imagine that if you are really busy or it is really cold outside, use one finger is much better to use four.

Google Maps 6.0 for Android move into Malls and Airports
Google upgrades Maps version to 6.0 for Android, which lets Smartphone and Tablet users in the United States and Japan know where they are and what places they might want to check out while they are indoors.
Google Maps, the online location application, can help people navigate streets, landmarks, parks, and other outside locations all over the world, but Google's new updated maps application for Android will help you get around inside, too. "When you're inside an airport, shopping mall, or retail store, a common way to figure out where you are is to look for a freestanding map directory or ask an employee for help," Brian McClendon, Google's president of Engineering for Google Earth and Maps, wrote in a blog post. "Starting today, with the release of Google Maps 6.0 for Android, that directory is brought to the palm of your hands, helping you determine where you are, what floor you're on, and where to go indoors."
Google Maps 6.0 for Android will display detailed location when a user is looking at a map on the application and zooms on a building. Users’ approximate locations will be indicated with a blue dot icon within several meters. The newly added indoor maps don't quite offer the turn-by-turn navigation you've come to know and depend upon (that's outside-only for now), but the provided layouts should help usher you along to the nearest bathroom, clothing shop or elevator. There's no fancy equipment at use, either. All of your positioning information is culled from the same set of data (including GPS) used for "My Location," although here it's been optimized to detect movement along the z-axis. That’s to say, try a nifty feature called "Automatic Floor Detection" that'll keep track of your progress as you move about from escalator to escalator.
Indoor Maps was added to version 6.0 of the Google Maps application for Android, works with Android 2.2 or higher, and will presumably be added to additional mobile platforms in the future. Will Google Indoor Maps work on desktop Web browsers? Answer is that the new indoor maps feature of Google Maps is only available on Android mobile devices at this time. Microsoft, by the way, already has indoor mapping of major malls for Windows Phone and indoor mapping of airports and malls for the desktop.
Google has endeavoring to extend its indoor reach, opening up its mapping inventory with a self-service tool (currently in beta) that'll allow business owners to upload floor plans directly to Maps. Airports in Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, and Tokyo are among the first to receive the indoor mapping treatment, joined by the Mall of America in Minnesota, certain locations of IKEA, Home Depot, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and others. While Google worked with these businesses to ensure a certain level of precision, the search company also set up a do-it-yourself site for other business owners to upload floor plans, blueprints, and directories and line them up with satellite images.
