Longtime Facebook Biz Dev Leader Ali Rosenthal to Depart

Alison “Ali” Rosenthal, a veteran of the Facebook business development team, will leave the company at the end of this week, she told NetworkEffect.

Rosenthal had focused on mobile business development in recent years, overseeing Facebook’s relationships with some 300 mobile operators around the world. She is not departing for a specific opportunity, though she said it was likely she’ll end up involved in another start-up.

Rosenthal had joined the company in February 2006, making her one of its earliest remaining employees. She’s the latest of many early Facebookers, including the three Facebook co-founders other than Mark Zuckerberg, to depart over the years.

“I’ve started to feel the pull of some new ideas,” said Rosenthal, adding that she felt Facebook had “unlocked real opportunities at the convergence of mobile and social” that she wants to explore.

By way of explanation for her own and other early-Facebooker departures, Rosenthal contended it’s just that Facebookers tend to be entrepreneurial, and recognize opportunities to extend the social Web in new directions outside of Facebook’s core mission. “It’s very alluring to try a specific idea in an industry you’re passionate about,” she said.

But for now, Rosenthal wants to take some time off. The only specific future plan she would share is to ditch her smartphone for a feature phone for a while in order to “extract myself a little from technology.”

Rosenthal has her MBA from Stanford and previously worked at General Atlantic Partners and Zazzle. She said her replacement has not yet been found, but that Facebook is hiring internationally to have biz dev folks overseeing carrier relationships on a local basis from offices in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

Other significant recent Facebook departures have included ad sales head Mike Murphy, engineering director Aditya Agarwal and PR head Brandee Barker.

Do We Need a Better Way to View Facebook Photos?

The average Facebook user has access to more than 100,000 photos taken of or shared by their friends, according to a sample taken by startup Pixable. But the only way to view them is by scrolling through albums or tabbing through tags of people.

So Pixable has endeavored to create a slideshow application called “Photofeed” that gives users a way to search and sort through photos, and see which of them are most popular.

New York City-based Pixable’s secret sauce relies on users allowing its application deep access to their Facebook profiles, so it can look for factors like whether a user has historically “liked” a friend’s photos, whether they’ve attended events together, and whether they share a last name. Then it ranks and sorts photos into large-format slideshows.

Unfortunately, in my very brief usage so far, the Photofeed app was rather unpolished, but I do think there’s an interesting opportunity for someone to develop alternatives to the Facebook album format. However, I’d imagine Facebook itself would have a leg up if it built something natively.

Highland Capital-backed Pixable–which will de-emphasize previous photo-printing and video-creation products–may prove to have value as it extends Photofeed to other platforms, so that becomes a way to reminisce about photos scattered on various services and sites. But as Pixable CEO Inaki Berenguer points out, Facebook is the Internet’s photo juggernaut, with more than 100 million photos uploaded per day. “Every month on Facebook you build a new Flickr or Picasa,” is how Berenguer put it.

Herd on the Street: Another Apple Bull

More bullish prognostications in advance of Apple’s next earnings report.

In his preview of CES, Barclays’ Ben Reitzes claims the company need not worry much about the conga line of iPad rivals expected to be announced at the show. If CES shows us anything, he says, it will be just how great Apple’s lead in the tablet space really is.

“At CES we believe that we will see many players attempt to mimic Apple’s model, with promises of content integration, battery life and software that will ultimately fall short,” Reitzes writes. “Outside of Apple, we believe many tablets will not meet bullish sales expectations. Like MP3 players, we believe some investors may learn the hard way that Apple’s ability to marry content, software, hardware design and style is unmatched in the tech sector. We believe that the evolution of the tablet market will look more like the iPod market than the phone market-–with Apple set to dominate.”

That seems a relatively safe prediction given what we’ve seen of the market to date–more so given the next-generation iPad will likely arrive at market around the same time as a lot of these new first-generation tablets. Reitzes figures the iPad 2 will be announced in the next six weeks, along with an April ship date. And he also expects it to feature front- and rear-facing cameras, a USB port and a higher-resolution display.

As far as 2011 tablet sales go, Reitzes is looking for upward of 38 million units, with the iPad accounting for about 60 percent. That’s about 23 million, which Reitzes says is likely quite conservative.

You Forgot “Think Different,” HP

Now that Hewlett-Packard’s gotten its webOS printers out of the way, the company’s moving on to the much more exciting business of mobile devices. Moments ago, the company distributed invitations to a Feb. 9 event in San Francisco promising “an exciting webOS announcement.”

Presumably that means we’ll be seeing the company’s eagerly anticipated “PalmPad” webOS tablet, though the invitation leaves room for other devices as well. “Think big. Think small. Think beyond,” it reads.

You forgot “Think different,” guys. Or, better yet, “Think original.”

Seem to have forgotten the Palm name as well …

Quips aside, it’s going to be very interesting to see what Palm’s been able to accomplish with HP’s heft behind it. Certainly the company’s decision to showcase its new webOS products at a big solo event in San Francisco, rather than at CES this week, suggests it’s got some exciting new hardware to show off.

If an App Is Your Content Strategy, You Are Doomed

When the iPad first arrived on the scene, many newspaper and magazine publishers seemed to see it as a digital savior that would restore their fortunes and allow them to withstand the whole “information wants to be free” aspect of the Internet. After an initial flurry of interest, however, the enthusiasm of readers seems to be waning, according to some recent numbers which show that sales of many magazine apps have been slipping.
